چکیده

Several years ago Schwinger proposed a physical mechanism for sonoluminescence in terms of photon production due to changes in the properties of the quantum-electrodynamic (QED) vacuum arising from a collapsing dielectric bubble. This mechanism can be re-phrased in terms of the Casimir effect and has recently been the subject of considerable controversy. This paper probes Schwinger’s suggestion in detail: using the sudden approximation we calculate Bogolubov coefficients relating the QED vacuum in the presence of the expanded bubble to that in the presence of the collapsed bubble. In this way we derive an estimate for the spectrum and total energy emitted. We verify that in the sudden approximation there is an efficient production of photons, and further that the main contribution to this dynamic Casimir effect comes from a volume term, as per Schwinger’s original calculation. However, we also demonstrate that the timescales required to implement Schwinger’s original suggestion are not physically relevant to sonoluminescence. Although Schwinger was correct in his assertion that changes in the zero-point energy lead to photon production, nevertheless his original model is not appropriate for sonoluminescence. In other work we have developed a variant of Schwinger’s model that is compatible with the physically required timescales.

Another possibility of sonoluminescence due to the cherenkov radiation from the ZPF field in a water bubble

Sonoluminescence is the light produced from the collapse of bubbles in water under ultrasound. Schwinger proposed a physical mechanism for sonoluminescence in terms of photon production due to changes of quantum electrodynamic energy contained in a collapsing dielectric bubble. However there are critics for the Schwinger’s proposal that his estimate of the Casimir energy involved is inaccurate ...

SONOLUMINESCENCE AND THE QED VACUUM a

In this talk I shall describe an extension of the quantum-vacuum approach to sono-luminescence proposed several years ago by J. Schwinger. We shall first consider a model calculation based on Bogolubov coefficients relating the QED vacuum in the presence of an expanded bubble to that in the presence of a collapsed bubble. In this way we shall derive an estimate for the spectrum and total energy...

On the possibility of vacuum QED measurements with gravitational wave detectors

Quantum electrodynamics (QED) comprises virtual particle production and thus gives rise to a refractive index of the vacuum larger than unity in the presence of a magnetic field. This predicted effect has not been measured to date, even after considerable effort of a number of experiments. It has been proposed by other authors to possibly use gravitational wave detectors for such vacuum QED mea...

Magnetic permeability of constrained scalar QED vacuum

We compute the influence of boundary conditions on the Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian scalar QED scalar for the case of a pure magnetic field. The boundary conditions constrain the quantum scalar field to vanish on two parallel planes separeted by a distance a and the magnetic field is assumed to be constant, uniform and perpendicular to the planes. The effective Lagrangian is obtained u...

Dense and Hot Holographic QCD: Finite Baryonic E Field

We investigate the response of dense and hot holographic QCD (hQCD) to a static and baryonic electric field E using the chiral model of Sakai and Sugimoto. At zero temperature, the dense state is an insulator for very weak external baryonic fields E. Strong fields with E > ( √ λMKK) 2 free quark pairs, causing the confined vacuum and matter state to decay. We generalize Schwinger’s QED persiste...
